I've got a book called Hacking the Cable Modem (<a href="http://nostarch.com/cablemodem.htm">http://nostarch.com/cablemodem.htm</a>) that provides some insight into how the things work and how the carriers use features to restrict bandwidth. I can bring it to the next meeting if anyone's interested in borrowing it (I wouldn't say it's worth buying)
